The Food and Drug Administration has issued a public safety advisory on the use of Nexium 40 mg/5mg capsules in children with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic renal insufficiency. This advisory is based on the results of a double-blind study of Nexium 40 mg in children, which showed a slight increase in heart rate and body temperature while taking Nexium 40 mg/5mg capsule. This study was conducted in the United States and Canada.

The FDA has issued a public safety advisory on the use of Nexium 40 mg/5mg capsules in children, with an updated analysis of the results of the double-blind study.

In an article about the safety of using Nexium 40 mg/5mg capsules in children,the FDA said: “The safety of use of the drug in children has not been established, but there have been a number of reports in the literature showing a possible increased risk of cardiovascular events with administration of the drug in younger children, with the most frequent reports being heart attack in young children and death in older children.

“In a study of more than 1,000 children in Canada, the safety of use of the drug in children has not been established. The risk of heart attack and stroke is increased with use of the drug, with the risk for heart attack occurring more than doubled in children over the age of 6 years.”

“The risk of cardiovascular events in older children and young adults taking the drug is higher than that in younger children and younger adults,” the FDA said.
